Black and white drawing of
the 88th ABW emblem, approved in 1993. The
Wright Flyer on the emblem is an exception to the “stylized
aircraft” rule. Exceptions are
rarely allowed.
DESIGN: Azure, a pile in bend
throughout Or. In chief a representation of the Wright Flyer plane Argent,
garnishing Silver Gray, pilot and engine of the second. In base, four flight
symbols ascending bendwise each trailing three vapor trails to base of the
third; all within a diminished bordure Silver Gray.
SIGNIFICANCE: Blue and yellow
are the Air Force colors. Blue alludes to the sky, the primary theater of Air
Force operations. Yellow refers to the sun and the excellence required of Air
Force personnel. The vintage airplane, the Wright Flyer, is indicative of the
aviation heritage of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the birthplace of
aviation, which the wing has supported since 1948. The center portion (a Mach
Cone or Shock Wave) denotes the aerospace mission of the Wing. The stylized
aircraft represents modern day weapon systems and symbolizes the Wing’s
ongoing support of Wright-Patterson’s role in the development of
airpower.
